“It’s true, I swear,” Amos half whispered, like he was worried about being overheard. “President Duran has depression, and it’s been getting worse ever since he took office. Brickhaven is always looking for ways to get more influence, so when Duran started looking for a psychiatrist, they found a way to push Dr. Rodwell’s name to the top of the list. Getting one of their members so close to the president was too awesome an opportunity to pass up. And now it’s become a part of this plot.”

My heart sank. Amos was gone, well and truly gone. Could I find a way to bring him back, at least part of the way? “Amos, we’ve been working together a long time, right?”

“Yes, which is why I know what you’re thinking. But I can prove it to you.”

It was clear that, for the moment at least, I had lost him to his illness. I knew I should just get up, walk out, and tell the nurses to check on Amos because he was exhibiting signs of confusion. But the truth was, although the content of his thoughts was irrational, his thought processes were logical enough, and he still appeared calm. I decided to play along for a few minutes and try to assess how entrenched his delusions were. “Prove what, exactly?”

He closed his eyes and mouthed, “Thank you,” as though in prayer. Then he propped himself up again, leaned toward me, and said, “Okay, so in a lockbox in his office on Unit 4, Dr. Rodwell keeps his private patient files, including Duran’s. The CR dates from Rodwell’s calendar match the dates he had treatment sessions with Duran. If you check the lockbox, you’ll see.”

“I see. And what do the initials CR have to do with the president?”

“‘Curia Regis’ means ‘King’s Council,’ which is what Dr. Rodwell is right now, if you see the president as the king. It’s a code.”

A plot. A code. I should have seen all this coming. The realization landed on my heart with a cold thud: Amos’s delusions were more intractable than ever. “So all this—the encrypted thumb drive, the patients you hypnotized—it was… what? Designed to convince me to sneak a look at Dr. Rodwell’s office so I can see that the president is one of his private patients?”

“No, that’s not it! The president is one of Rodwell’s private patients so Brickhaven can influence him. It’s all part of the plot. Neviah.” Amos grabbed the bedrail. “You’re not listening. You promised to listen.”

He was starting to get upset. I decided to stop challenging his delusions; there would be plenty of time for that back on Unit 4. At the moment, he needed support and gentle care. I had hoped that one of the benefits of my meeting with Amos would be that it would allow him to get some things off his chest and ease his psychological tension, but instead he was getting agitated. It was time to bring the conversation to a close. “I am listening, but I think you need to rest.
